Mt. Harmon Recognizes Deacon Miller

It’s been 5 years since I started my college career at the Savannah College of art and Design and since day one I’ve been infatuated with the idea of a Bible Belt church. I began by photographing these structures in one of my classes, using large format cameras to show how gradiose each and every structure was. It was quite strange to first bike around the city of Savannah and see a church on practically every street corner and on Sundays if I was lucky I’d pass a church with open doors so I could hear the choir sing their hearts out. This weekend I was finally fortunate enough to find myself invited to photograph and experience this sort of service at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church on the East side of Savannah. Carl Miller (pictured below) has gone to the church since he was a little boy. In fact, his family has been parishioners at the church since the congregations inception in 1929 with his Grandmother being the oldest member to attend at the age of 6 years old. In the following photos I give you a glimpse into their church and Carl Millers recognition as a new Deacon to the congregation.

Be sure to push play on the audio track to get a feeling for the energy of the congregation.
